Highline Horses

Equine Science Program

The Equine Science Program is for high school students who are serious about riding and becoming educated and involved in the horse industry. It is taught in three, three-month long segments, and students can take the class, for one, two, or all three sessions. (September-November, January-March, May-July)

Coursework:

  • The general curriculum is based on the 4-H Advancement Level Program. Each level is passed by passing a written and riding test, which will count as the final exam grade for the course. Each student can set a goal to pass a particular level after either one, two, or three segments of the course, depending on their riding level.
  • In addition to the Advancement Level Tests, students will be expected to complete a variety of projects, each worth a given number of points. All of the students' projects must add up to a certain number of points by the end of the term.

Projects:

  • Each student will be expected to present at least one speech or demonstration in a public forum, or to the 4-H club members, on any horse-related topic.
  • Students must study a career in the horse industry. They can either do a series of one to two days of shadowing, or participate in an internship related to the horse industry.
  • Students will teach a hands-on demonstration to younger children about something horse-related.
  • Each student will be required to organize an event (a clinic, seminar, show, etc.), plan it, and manage it.

The program is based in Littleon, near University and Belleview. Please take this into consideration when registering for the course.
